Subject: Behind the lies
by David McGriffy   mcgriffy@io.com

Bartcop,

I think I can explain why the claim that Gore is a liar seems so
preposterous to most liberals.  Now I must say that even when read in
context some of what Al has said seems unfortunate to me.  I think the
pattern here is that he is not a great politician.  He keeps attempting
to spin things his way and it often doesn't work.  My feeling is that either
Clinton or Reagan would have gotten away with many of the stories that
have caused Gore trouble.  But here's why these supposed lies bug me:

Behind every 'lie' from Gore is a point that is actually in his favor.
Behind every slip up by Bush there is a larger truth that goes against him.

Gore:

'Created the Internet' - Even though the actual quote is a silly
exageration the reality is that Gore understands and supports technology
issues better than most.

'Was the inspiration for Love Story' - Debatably true but more
importantly it is clear that Gore is a devoted family man.

'Mother sung " ... the Union Label" to him' - Does anyone deny that Gore
is a supporter of unions?

'Love Canal' - Aside from the fact that this one is a pretty bad
misquote, Gore is one of the strongest proponents of the environmental
movement in Washington.

Bush:

'Couldn't name four world leaders' - Perhaps the attack question was unfair
but the larger point, that Bush doesn't know much about world politics, is valid.

'Was a guard deserter' - Seems to actually be true and is an indication of the larger
truth that he does not take even the most important responsibilities very seriously.
(Studies death penalty cases for a WHOLE half hour each.)

'Can't speak well' - Everyone makes a verbal slip now and then but Bush's seem
to be indicative of either some real learning disability or a general lack of intelligence.

You get the idea.  I suspect that Gore's lack of slick political skill
will leave him as a well meaning but ineffective president like Carter.
I fear that Bush's lack of depth would leave him open to manipulation by
the more extreme elements of his own party, like Reagan but without the
'great communicator's' ability to make it seem like a good idea.  I
suspect it comes down to can't start the good vs. can't stop the evil.
