table for the November 2006 congressional elections - nothing short of the survival of a meaningful
constitutional system in the United States.

The majority opinion, which stopped Bush from proceeding with a kangaroo court that stripped Gitmo detainees
of basic legal protections and mocked the Geneva Conventions, carried a profound secondary message - that the
Court was not prepared to endorse Bush's vision of his "war powers" as limitless and beyond challenge.

But it was equally noteworthy that only five of the nine justices believed that the rule of law and constitutional limits
on Bush's powers should prevail. Four justices -  Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts - have made clear that
they are prepared to rubber-stamp any judgment that Bush makes.
 

So, we're one judge short of losing democracy in America.
It's enough to make you want to vote in November.

Israel's Big Gamble

Israel last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh
if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed.

The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.
It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.

Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.
But last night's direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh, a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.
 

You know me - I don't get into this mess, but as one who plays poker,
that's the kind of bet that could easily backfire.

It's a hueueueuge gamble because if that soldier dies, Israel has already committed to killing the PM.
If they don't, they look weak when they can't afford to look weak.
And the assassination of the Palastinian PM wouldn't be a good thing for Der Monkey's quagmire.
I understand the value of getting your man back, but Israel's bet is hueueueueueueuge.

In the near future, when someone asks, "How did things get so out of control?"
they might look at this incident the opposite way of how we look at the Bay of Pigs.

The world could use a little good luck.

American gullibility

The bigger and badder the boogeyman is, the more Bush's arms dealer allies get paid to "protect" us.
When the Soviet Union fell, they lost their reason for spending $400 billion a year on war toys.
Now we're in a never-ending war not with Iraq, but with an idea that can't be killed.

Subject: religious insanity

Bart, I get your point.
I believe "organized religion" was necessary during the millennia before the industrial revolution.
It explained all of  the whys & hows of the unexplainable for people.

Sure - they can't explain why the sun came up,
so they said, "The sun god lifted it with his damn hands."
 

On the other side of  the coin, there are still many things that science cannot explain.
And who's to say God isn't responsible for science by the way?

That's a tough one - who's to say Ol' Bart didn't create the world?
Maybe being a bartcop.com subscriber is the key to eternal salvation?
The fact that I don't claim that proves I'm better then them.

People who come to Vegas the weekend of Sept 16 will have a good time.
What we're offering is real, like Perkel's Church, it's not 72 Virgins or an eternity in the clouds.
 

You/we are up against thousands of years of organized religion. I  think organized religion
has lost it's usefulness for many people in  modern times including myself.

"God" is a tool that separates the scared, the sick and the old from their money.
 

Personally, I am spiritual but don't subscribe to an organized religion.
Basically, my view of God isn't as a separate thing but that God is in all of us and everything.

But bottom line, we must stop the religiously insane from running the world.

The best, though, was Tally's rant on what the democrats need to say if they ever got some sac.
She ripped! I swear, I got aroused hearing her litany of outrages we've had to deal with for so long.
That bit is a must hear! I have never heard it put any better! I love you Tally!

In this case, this is "fewer dead soldiers."
Who's going to stand up for more dead soldiers?

The president wants to stay in Iraq for at least three more years. It's not that he won't set a date to withdraw.
He doesn't even have a plan that gets to the point where the US could end the occupation. In practice he wants
to stay in Iraq forever. What Repubicans are voting for is More of the Same, More of the Same failed policy.

Subject: Oswald

Bart:

I've read the Warren Commission report and Maria Oswald says that she did indeed take that photo.
She never recanted. Personally I think that Oswald did participate in a conspiracy shooting of Kennedy,
that he was in fact a patsy, and didn't realize that the rest had set him up as a patsy until after he was arrested.
The best explanation of that photo is that his handlers told him to have his wife take it and he was just too
stupid to realize why at the time. And yes, some members of the conspiracy could have planted the photo later.

But I've never bought that Oswald acted alone. Assassinations all have one thing in common: the nutty assassin
does the deed in public and grandstands for the crowd and says something like "thus for all tyrants" like Booth did,
while risking capture, in fact almost demanding capture. Oswald may indeed have had that personality, but he hid
and intended to get away. One of the last things he said was that he was the patsy.

They started with peaches and cream yesterday and will have silver queen ready this weekend!
Life is good!  Funny thing is, there is a farm just down the road from Simon Bros. that sells corn
but it sucks like an electrolux.

Simon Bros. is huuuueeeeegely popular here and when I visited last year at 8am they had a car line
20 deep waiting to get their corn.  It's a good thing I am a big guy 'cause I had to throw some elbows

Another problem is not enough rape opportunities in Iraq—that's probably making the soldiers really edgy.
Apparently, the Iraqi women are kept sequestered, and swaddled in all these clothes—they look like they're
wrapped in yards of big sheets. Without even a seductive ankle peeking out. Not easy to strip, and get at,
for rape purposes. Vietnam was a lot easier. All those flimsy little pajama outfits—guys could just rip them off
with one gesture, and mount. And the girls were so tiny, didn't even need to break a sweat while holding them down.
