Gates & the Iran-Contra Legacy
   by Ivan Eland

 consortiumnews.com

 Excerpt:
Official Washington quickly grew tired of the Iran-Contra scandal in the mid-to-late 1980s.
The tales of money-laundering, arms smuggling and even drug trafficking were deemed
too complicated and too troubling for the public to properly comprehend.

So, few of the true Iran-Contra lessons were ever learned. In essence, the White House's
abuse of power amounted to a test run for an all-powerful Executive who could override
the nation's laws and the Constitution at his whim to pursue foreign policies that few Americans
would understand, let alone endorse, such as shipping weapons to Iran, then and now labeled
a supporter of international terrorism.

In this guest essay, the Independent Institute's Ivan Eland looks back at that pivotal scandal
and what it means for Bush to appoint Gates, an Iran-Contra veteran, to be Secretary of Defense:

"Carville has spent the past six years happily sequesterd in the gimp closet,
visited occasionally by Dick Cheney and the angular harpy he refers to as his wife,
Mary Matalin. Now that the Democrats have retaken the House and the Senate,
he is apparently allowed out on furlough for more than just occasionally servicing
Tim Russert.  He has managed to reclaim a bit of the spotlight once again as he
tilts irrelevantly at windmills and carps about Howard Dean."
--Jane Hamsher, seething with hate,  "Carville's New Gig"

A mountain of personal insults because Carville alleged that Dean failed to spend the $6M
that he had in his pocket to help an additional dozen Democrats who lost by a point.

Why is it impossible that Carville could be right?
Why does Carville deserve a mountain of personal insults for having an opinion?

The Neocons' Last Stand
   by Sid Blumenthal

 guardian.co.uk

 Excerpt:
Even before the election, the guardians of the Bush family trust surfaced as the presumptive executive
committee of the executive branch. For years, Poppy Bush and his former national-security team have
tried to rescue the president from himself - and from the clutches of his neo-con centurions. Earlier this year
Bush Sr quietly approached a retired four-star general to inquire if he would be willing to replace Rumsfeld,
but that premature coup came to naught. Several of the father's associates personally warned Bush Jr before
the Iraq war that it would lead to sectarian civil war, only to be dismissed with disdain.

James Baker is now chairman of the Iraq Study Group (ISG) and has assumed the aura of a regent.
He is burdened with more tasks than those specified in his commission's brief about Iraq. Not only is he
developing a whole new US foreign policy, he is trying to salvage whatever can be retrieved from the
wreckage of Bush's presidency for its last two years and to prevent the Republican party, having lost
the crown jewel of the Congress, from being permanently tainted.

Subject: McCain

Bart, you wrote:

> I keep reading, "Carville thinks..."
> Stop telling me what he thinks, stop telling me what
> he hopes for - and just tell me what he said.

I'm pissed because you didn't take that attitude with Nader.
Oh, no.
With Nader, you put it out again and again that he said "No difference" even after I
asked you to either believe me or do the research yourself that he never said that.

Tracy, first thing - take a deep breath and reminder I'm a good guy.
Did he ever utter the phrase, "The lesser of two evils is still evil?"
Do his followers know the difference between "the two evils" and "no difference?"

He said, "...haven't done enough to distinguish themselves from the Republicans."
But you kept harping "No difference" all the time when he never wrote that I could find,
nor did he say it the several times I heard him speak.

With Carville you say, "What are the facts?  What did he really say?"
but with Nader you spread lies when I was telling you the truth.

I don't know what to think about this.
 Tracy Blevins, Ph.D.

First, I don't trust Nader.
He won't run for any office but Leader of the Free World.
Why didn't he run for something Nov 7 so we could see if
he could attract some votes in some local race?

A man in my position reads a truckload of e-mails every day from lots of people.
After a while, the bumper-sticker simplicities told me that's how Naderite's think.

There's often a difference between what Nader (or anybody) says and what his peeps hear.
Funny, you don't sound like one of them :)

I'm trying to find out what happened with the top dogs in the party.
Instead of facts, I'm getting interpretations - impressions.
Ain't nothing wrong with an ignorant person (me) asking for the facts.

Also, people tell me "Nader is The Man, he says what counts."
Maybe now that we've won an election, we can look at him in new light.

Clear Channel calls it quits
They can't survive without Bush's insanity

 WaHoPo

 Excerpt:
Clear Channel, the 1,200-station radio chain that sponsored Bush's bloody quagmire in Iraq ,
has agreed to sell the company to a consortium of private-equity firms for nearly $27 billion.
The buyers bid for Tribune Co., which owns several newspapers and television stations.

So-called old media have shown little or negative growth in recent years, which makes them
unattractive to Wall Street and public ownership. It's been all downhill for Clear Channel stock
since its high of nearly $100 per share in 2000, and a buyout likely represents the greatest value
owners felt they could get for their shareholders before common sense sweeps the Capitol.

Subject: memo to Carville

Memo to James Carville: Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

Today, Carville stated that *DEAN* was at fault for the Dems not picking up another 20 seats in the
House, and that, "I [Carville] think he should be held accountable. I would describe his leadership as
Rumsfeldian in its competence." When asked by a reporter whether Dean should be dumped,
Carville replied, "In a word, do I think? Yes."

Rumsfeldian incompetence?
Trying to take credit for the 50-state strategy?  Is he HIGH?

It's one thing for him to (stupipdly) pimp Harold Ford as the next DNC chair, but to go so far
as to call Dean incompetent and compare his performance to that of a mindless, war-mongering
asshole is over the line. (And no way is Carville free-lancing on this one, either).

Schumer and Emmanuel are giving Dean props in public, and you know the state party
officials are in love with Dean at the moment, so I don't think he's going anywhere.
But all this in-fighting taking place in public has to stop. And fast.
MDG

Calling Nov 7 a "failure" is cricker-crocker - that's why I asked for quotes and context.
You quote Carville, but you failed to send the link.

Odd that Carville would accept (apparently) 2000, 2002, and 2004 but then characterize
2006 as a "Rumsfeldian failure" that someone should be held accountable for.

Something I found:
According to Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, "there were two dozen seats in which Republicans
got 51 percent or less....There is a very big difference between defending these seats as incumbents
or still trying to pick these up while they are being protected by Republicans."

Carville said "We beat the hell out of them at the committees, at the congressional [campaign] committees.
The DNC [Democratic National Committee] left the money on the table."

So, each side seems to have good points - so we need more facts to make a decision.

Dean had a great victory on Nov 7, picking up 28 seats or so. Greenburg-Carville seem to be saying
that 28 could've been 52 if Dean had spend the money that was given to him on tight races.

Greenburg-Carville have no trouble smiting Dean for winning, but I didn't hear
the same vitriol when Kerry left money on the table - while losing - in 2004.

Dems hand Pelosi first defeat
It was fun while it lasted...

 Link

 Excerpt:
Democrats pushed John Murtha down the steps and kicked Nancy Pelosi in the face, knocking
several of her teeth to the floor when they picked Rep. Steny Hoyer (Who?) to be House majority leader.
Murtha was Pelosi's good friend and handpicked choice to help her move legislation over Bush's ass,
when  the Democrats panicked at the thought of winning and ate one of their own for no goddamn reason.

Hoyer (Who?) defeated the immesely popular nationwide hero John Murtha in a vote of 149-86.
The vote was recorded on those fabulous Diebold Machines we keep hearing about.

"Steny was more where the mainstream of where the party was," said Barney Frank.
"She's a very smart woman who made an error in judgment."

Wait, Murtha heads the "End this war" faction of the Democratic Party.
Why are Democrats opposing him?

Cheeses, it's been 9 days and already I need a graphic of Pelosi with
a Democratic knife sticking out of her back.

Who the hell is Steny Hoyer and why is he favored over Murtha?

Pigboy's comeuppance

 marketwatch.com

 Excerpt:
At last, Rush Limbaugh got his comeuppance. And he did it all by himself. My favorite Election Day
moment occurred at the very end of the process, when newly elected Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill
slyly thanked Limbaugh for his role in her victory. Yes, revenge was sweet for the Democrats.
And why not?

Limbaugh had delighted in kicking sand in their faces for years, luxuriating in the GOP's dominance in
national politics. In contrast to Limbaugh's trademark, piercing proclamations, McCaskill made her
remark while flashing a big, triumphant smile. But she clearly relished in twisting the knife.

Carville's New Gig
Why it's important to hate him

have retaken the House and the Senate, he is apparently allowed out on furlough for more than just
occasionally servicing Tim Russert.  He has managed to reclaim a bit of the spotlight once again as
he tilts irrelevantly at windmills and carps about Howard Dean.

In his performance on The Situation Room today today he was a skeletal rack of twitching indignation,
castigating Dean for not giving Rahm more money to light his cigars with give to Democratic congressional
candidates ("my heart bleeds for them" he laments with the melodrama button cranked all the way up to 11).
I wanted Bay Buchanan to offer him a hankie tell him not to worry, Rahm would only have flushed more
money down the shitter to follow the $4 million he threw after losers Diane Farrell and Tammy Duckworth,
but she just nodded with a bobbling wag of angular features that made me think she could be auditioning
for the role of his Second Missus.

If Carville is guilty of something, why not mention what that is?
The Carville/Clinton/DNC haters are insult-driven, why can't they be fact-driven?

How do they expect to win converts by screaming "Poopy pants!" at the opposition?

Why Trent Lott?
  by bad seed Jonah Goldberg

 latimes.com

 Excerpt:
Who says the Republicans are the Stupid Party? Huge numbers of voters told exit pollsters that they
were disgusted with the nigh-upon Roman excesses of the GOP; the self-dealing, the pork-barrel
spending, the aloofness was just too much. Meanwhile, strategists warned that the Republican Party
was becoming too white, too male and too exclusively Southern. Ken Mehlman, the outgoing head
of the RNC, said after the recent thumpin', "We rely too much on white guys for our vote."

So what did the GOP senators do when they needed to pick their No. 2 man in the Senate?
They shouted, 'This is a job for Trent Lott!'"

My birthday was election day and i got exactly what i wanted.  The IMPEACHMENT TEAM!
Xmas is coming and I derserve another present.  Please send me some t-shirt. (order given)

I'd like to thank you for two things.  First it was you that inspired me to go see Shirley in concert.
I wrote you the morning after. loved it.  You knew.

Second and most important;  I feel that YOU may have done more for our country
in the last few years than anybody I can think of.  I mean that.

You were telling the truth back when it was dangerous to do so.  Wellstone? Carnahan to name a few.
The BFEE has been exposed and there is now a chance for liberty to prevail.

Someday maybe we can have a shot of tequila together.  Maybe when bu$h is IMPEACHED!!!!
Keep hammering.

Please do not let the republicans pressure the Dems for a solution to Iraq.   IRAQ IS A CRIME.
There is no easy solution for this CRIME.  Bu$h has no solution; he lied us into it.
The only way to begin the healing is to prosecute the bastards that committed this CRIME.
Crimes are not and never were a US policy.  This is on the BFEE and nobody else.

Try listening to some Warren Zevon sometime if you haven't already.
He has been my favorite for years.
 steve

Steve, thanks for all that.
We have to stop the killing of soldiers in Iraq - that part needs to be solved.
I doubt anything but another Saddam can stop them from killing each other.

I wouldn't want to be in Bush's shoes.

Take a hike, Karl
 His reputation is ruined

 Link

 Excerpt:
One of the best results of the 2006 elections was the shattering of Karl Rove's reputation as
a political marvel. Rove has made more excuses and alibis for the Republican losses than a
football coach who has just lost a 49-0 game. He wants to blame scandals in the party and
other extraneous reasons but never the president or himself. Rove's campaigns of smashing
opponents by any means possible have caught up with him. His history is full of stories of
dirty tricks and hardball tactics...Any misery for Rove in 2006 was well deserved.
He has made a career of making misery for others.

Subject: Carville

Bart,

Carville is pissed that in the last week of the campaign Dean, DNC, Rahm etc.. sat on 6 million bucks
that they could have rushed in to some very tight House races that were taken by less that 1% by Repubs.
He feels that this would have gotten potentially another 10 seats for us.

Dean and Rahm have responded that Carville just doesn't know what he is talking about.
Who knows?

Tom

Tom, I agree and that's my point.
Before we lynch Carville, can we ask if what he said was true?

IF Carville told them, "I could win you five more seats if I had three million dollars more,"
and the DNC wanted to "pull a Kerry" and not spend the money, he should be pissed.

We get plenty of name calling (from the usual Huffington suspects) but no facts.

Robert Gates-Gate
 by Ray McGovern

 consortiumnews.com

 Excerpt:
One of the first tests of the Democratic congressional majority's mettle may come during the
lame-duck session with Republicans still in control, as Bush rushes through Robert Gates,
a longtime Bush Family ally, into the job of Defense Secretary. Bush's clever maneuver has
linked the Senate's acceptance of Gates to the removal of Rumsfeld, whose arrogance and
bungling have made him a top target of the Democrats. Bush's offer-you-can't-refuse is that
if you want Rumsfeld's head, you must take a dive on Gates.

Gates, however, has a checkered past that makes his appointment as Defense Secretary
problematical. New evidence suggests that he lied to Congress during the Iran-Contra scandal
and during his confirmation in 1991 to become CIA director under George H.W. Bush.
[For details, see Consortiumnews.com's "The Secret World of Robert Gates."]

Bart -- Re the pic of Santorum and his daughter;

Regardless of how bad she looks in the picture, she's 10 years old.
She's not responsible for ANYTHING!  She doesn't deserve to be ridiculed
in public and certainly not by us on the humanitarian side of the political fence.

Let's stop picking on little girls. Leave that to Rush and the rest of the Repugs.
 Jack H

I had/have no idea how old she is, and I'm certainly not calling her "Pennsylvania's dog."
I mocked her 100-year old clothes, which I assume Mrs. Man-on-dog picked out for her.
If she wore a comdom over her nose, I could mention that, right? And not having kids,
I'm just guessing, but do normal 10 year old girls still carry their dolls?  In public?

I'm breathing a sigh of relief that, as weird as this man-on-dog, dead-fetus-handling family is,
at least Man-on-dog Santorum is out of power and can't make other little girls look and dress this way.
