Subject: Is Humanity really ready for nuclear Power?

With the recent nuclear disaster in Japan the questions are raised again - Should be using nuclear power.
Is it safe enough? Should we stop building nuclear plants? Should we shut down the plants we have?

I personally think that it is theoretically possible to have safe nuclear power, that we have the technology
to do it right if we choose to do so. But I don't think that humanity has the disciplines to actually do what
it takes to run nuclear plants safely. And for that reason I think we should at least stop building new plants
and we should aggressively upgrade existing plants to a far higher safety standard.

The question is - how safe is safe enough? The answer is, with nuclear, you have to get to 100%.
We can't be running plants that might some day require that major cities be abandoned of thousands of years.
We can't have plants that can spew radiation into the food chain that everyone on the planet has to eat.

The problem today is that plant operators take safety shortcuts to save money. Safety inspectors are bribed,
corrupt politicians want deregulation, standards too weak and are not followed. As we saw in the Gulf Oil Spill
companies routinely ignore what they are supposed to do just to save a buck. But look at the costs in the long run.
When safety is ignored, bad things happen. With nuclear, bad things can last thousands of years.

So even if plants can be designed to be safe the real question is if humans can be trusted to not cut corners
and actually do the things it will take to be safe. I don't think we are there yet. The Japanese meltdown is
an example. They invented the word tsunami and they built a nuclear power plant on the ocean that wasn't
tsunami ready. They thought they were saving a buck but in the long run this will be the most expensive
mistake Japan made since siding with the Germans in WWII.

We cannot continue to fool ourselves and merely choose to believe we can run nuclear safely when we can't.
We have to look at reality and put a halt to this until we know we can do it right. We haven't even yet figured
out how to dispose of spent fuel rods safely. We should at least figure that out before moving forward with
any more nuclear plants.

Subject: Obama dithering?

Bart,
I am yet undecided about the Libyan conflict. However, Obama has played it perfectly.
"Dithering"? Please, he waited until American citizens were out, the Arab League was in
agreement and the U.N. resolution was passed. The U.N. resolution was passed on Friday
and the operation began Saturday. How in the fuck is that dithering?

Half baked Alaska and Depends McCain wanted to attack sooner?
Great, then the Arab League would have been pissed, U.N. would have been pissed and
we would now be trying to figure out how to get American citizens out that would probably
be held hostage if not human shields. No matter what President Obama does the right wing
is going to complain. I have never seen a president criticized nearly as much as him.
 Jon in Ohio

I think the perception most people have of Obama is this:
If his house was burning
he would ask a lot of questions and try to look at the problem
from several viewpoints and study possible solutions while every other person in the world
would dial 9-1-1 and then turn on the hose and start squirting the fire.

Thoughtful reflection isn't the answer to every problem.

America 'Trapped' by False Narratives

by Robert Parry

Subject: criticizing the President

Why do conservatives hate America? Before you connies go into screaming hysterics, consider this.
When the Bush REGIME (thanks, Rush) was in power, any criticism of the president, his administration
or their policies were met with howls of “ANTI-AMERICAN!!!!! You hate America! You hate the flag,
you hate the troops. You hate Mom, apple pie, baseball and Chevrolet. We’re at war, you’re giving aid
and comfort to the enemy. Why do you hate America?”

What’s different today? We’re still at war but now we have a Democratic president, who happens to
be black, btw. But all day, on AM hate radio, starting with the pill popping Junkie, Limbaugh and all day,
every day on FAUX NotNews, the president, his administration and their policies are trashed, ridiculed,
lied about and slandered. Limbaugh has called Obama everything but the “N” word and even the wife
and children of the president have been attacked. (That would be you, Beck).

So, using their own language and reasoning, I ask the conservatives this. Why do you hate America?
Why do you hate the flag and the troops? And why, WHY, are you giving aid and comfort to the enemy?
Why do you hate America?

I'm 57 and Elizabeth Taylor was big before I was interested in girls,
so I wonder how people younger than me can even relate to her.

But there's one thing you should know:
Elizabeth Taylor, along with Elton John and the always-mocked Sharon Stone
worked tirelessly for decades to raise money and spread awareness of the AIDS problem.

Subject: You Were Right - Again

Bart,

You tried to tell us back in the run-up to the last election that we needed Hillary in the White House.
Obama got the nod, and won the election.  You threw your support in his direction.

In hind sight, you were absolutely correct.  Barrack Obama is a nice person.
He is an intelligent person.  However, he does not know how to fight.

America loves a fighter, which is why I support Hillary for 2012.

Formula jokes from a millionaire comic

It was raining so hard in Los Angeles that Charlie Sheen
changed his slogan from “winning” to “drowning.”

Remember when Obama said we can’t fight two wars and vowed
to change our policy? Well, he did. Now we’re fighting three wars.

Obama said we will send economic aid to Libya to help the Libyan
people reach their dreams.  And if that works, they’ll try it here.

Cocaine was found at the Kennedy Space Center.
It’s one small step for man, and one giant leap for Charlie Sheen.
