Political parties rarely vanish altogether, and hardly ever over a single election cycle.
So the demise of the Republicans as a national organization is probably exaggerated.
ha ha
At minimum, its strength across the old Confederacy and what Mencken called the “Cow States”
should enable the GOP to keep Congress semi-paralyzed and the shrinking Fox News audience
in a state of incipient hysteria even as it fights internal battles of surpassing nastiness.
In that sense, the fight over Hagel’s nomination and McCain’s erratic quest to turn Benghazi
into a huge scandal are symptomatic: all word-games, question-begging and make-believe
indignation aimed not at governance, but TV appearances.
For all the theatrics, Republican senators (didn't filibuster Hagel's nomination) indefinitely.
I expect most are privately appalled at seeing Ted Cruz, (R-Cunty) the freshman senator from Texas,
question Hagel’s loyalty—something I doubt he’d say anywhere except in front of a TV camera.
If you can, always read Gene's columns in their entirety.

A University of North Carolina student who says she was raped has been charged with violating
the school's honor code and creating a hostile environment for her alleged attacker by speaking out.
Landen Gambill—a sophomore who last spring reported being raped by a student she says is still
on the school's Chapel Hill campus—was notified of the charge last week in an email from the
school's graduate attorney general. The email, published by Jezebel.com, reads in part:
You are being charged with the following Honor Code violation(s):
Disruptive or intimidating behavior that willfully abuses, disparages, or otherwise interferes with
another so as to adversely affect their academic pursuits, opportunities for employment, etc.
The matter has been turned over to UNC's student-run Honor Court. If found guilty,
Gambill could be subject to a range of sanctions, including suspension or expulsion.
If you can rape a woman and then get her in trouble for speaking up, rape is legal.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was not invited to speak at CPAC this year
because he broke with conservatives on key issues over the past year, they say.
Said organizer Al Cardenas: (Who?) "CPAC is like the all-star game for professional athletes;
you get invited when you have had an outstanding year.
(You mean like Romney and Palin had?) ha ha
Hopefully he will have another all-star year in the future, at which time we will be happy to extend
an invitation. This is a conservative conference, not a Republican Party event."
Nate Silver points out that conservatives "had been underrating how moderate Christie was
-- perhaps because they were so desperate at that time to find alternatives to Romney and their
other six dwarfs. Now that he's been 'outed' as a moderate, it may be hard to close the closet door."

He uses the “straw man” argument by taking the 4-6% figures of roughly 50K Catholic priests
in the United States (I assumed that was understood to apply to the U.S.) that have been accused
of sexual abuse; and extrapolate it into 20,000 sexual perverted Catholic priests preying on our
children by using the 400,000 priests world wide figure.
Hey, are not there a lot of variables here for which we have no reported abuse cases in the
rest of the world? The studies on the priest abuses have indicated that the rate of incidences
in the U.S. is not greater than other clergy or the general male population. Stick with the facts, Jack!
And, don’t use your prejudices to speculate erroneously on the some other inflated figures.

It never ceases to amaze me the hubris of the Republican party. As if it wasn't enough that they turned
Clinton's surplus into the biggest deficit in history, now they are deliberately crashing the economy with
their sequestration. They seem to think it's not treason to hold the economy hostage trying to destroy
Medicare and Social Security as ransom.
But I blame the voters who elected them. If you vote for dogs you're going to get fleas.

Britain's top cardinal, Keith O'Brien, has decided not to participate in the papal election
following reports that he made unwanted sexual advances toward four priests in the 1980s.
"I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me, but rather on Pope Benny the Rat
and on his successor," O'Brien, who will retain the title of cardinal, said in a statement today.
The Scottish cardinal, 74, is the latest voting Cardinal to be tainted by scandal but the first
to recuse himself from the conclave. O'Brien has been accused of committing "inappropriate acts"
in his relations with three priests and one former priest from the diocese of St. Andrews and Edinburgh.
O'Brien has been an outspoken opponent of gay rights.
Of course he is - they ALL are.
"Gay rights" is bad but raping young boys is fine.
