The American middle class is in trouble. Median family income is down. Jobs are scarce. Opportunities people
thought they'd earned through hard work are disappearing before their eyes. Working families are falling further
and further behind.
And that means it's hard for progressives not to feel like we're losing, too. Our movement is about putting the
concerns of those working Americans at the forefront of our national agenda.
Now, you can argue that Democrats in Congress should be doing more to win legislative battles - although,
as someone who is in the room every day, I can tell you that I don't doubt for a second my colleagues' (proper use)
commitment to moving our country in the right direction. (They're just too afraid to fight for it.)
And you can argue that the Democratic Party should be using different tactics to win elections.
But the fact remains: We as a progressive movement are losing the argument.
On issue after issue, we're playing defense.

Subject: Cut Afghanistan not Medicare
In the battle over the budget Republicans are calling for cutting Medicare and Social Security
which in the long run is going to end up with our old people dying in poverty on the streets like
they used to before we had those programs.
What they should cut instead is Iraq and Afghanistan. Those wars are wasting 2 billion dollars a week
and accomplishing nothing. Bin Laden is dead. Mission Accomplished. Bring all the troops home now
and add the 2 billion a week to shore up Medicare and Social Security.
Wars aren't free. Someone has to pay from them. We need that money here. Time to put Americans first.
Throwing the elderly under the bus to pay for wars we never should have fought is just plain wrong.

The apostrophe goes outside the s only if the noun is plural.
Gates, as a person is singular so it is Gates's, but if you were
talking about the family Gates it would be Gates'.
"Robert Gates's pony is brown", as opposed to "The Gates' house is brown."

Although I definitely read the site for the scathing political commentary
I also found all this bullshit about possessive cases and names quite interesting.
I always thought in the case of names that BOTH forms were correct;
because, as you pointed out, colloquialisms can sometimes change convention.
But in the email Yvette sent you this jumped out at me:
"The possessive of a singular noun is formed by adding ’s {driver’s seat} {engineer’s opinion}."
"The possessive of a plural noun that ends in s or es is formed by
adding an apostrophe { parents’ house} { foxes’ den}."
So, that would mean you were most definitely correct.

In case you can't spot it, the Rays have removed the cigar from under "Smokers,"
causing some consternation from the old-timers in Florida
It's like people have nothing better to do than walk around, fucking things up.
I say you wear the old jerseys, as is.
If you do, some kid will ask, "Why do our uniforms have cigars on them?"
And coach can say, "Because fifty years ago, we were ignorant about smoking.
Today we know smoking kills, but that's part of the history of this team."
See how easy that was?
You tell the truth - you state the facts.
Same for Tom Sawyer and the N word.
You sit the class down, you tell them,
"We're about to read a great book that was written back when Moses was
still in short pants. It was a different time then - and attitudes have changed."
Explain to those kids,

Why not teach the kids the truth - age appropriate, of course.

That unquestioning worship is the reason I took a break from your site
and canceled my radio subscription a few years ago.
There's always a reason to cancel a sunscription or to withhold a donation.
I express maybe 140 opinions a day, and that gets me in trouble.
Do you get that I can't possibly agree with you 140 times in a row each issue?
And even if I did, I could say something the next day to anger you, meaning
we could agree 279 times out of 280 and still, you'd have a reason to unsubscribe.
As far as I am concerned Robert Scheer has contributed much to the political
discussion over the years and has tried to shine a light on injustice. As someone
who has had his boots on the ground in a variety of places in order to give us
firsthand accounts I believe he deserves much more respect than you have shown him.
I believe you are being illogical.

But, according to Strunk & White's "Elements of Style", the possessive of Gates is Gates's.

When I was taking High School English back in the 1960s,

Subject: Ignoring the past doesn't change history
I don't understand this political farce the Republicans are pulling where they are pretending
to care about the national debt. We are in the middle of the Bush recession. They are the ones
who caused this mess and now they are holding America hostage over a situation they created.
As much as Republicans want to pretend that history was different reality prevents history from
being changed. What happened happened and now we have to pay the price. I think it's time we
start talking about the Bush recession and figure out what we are going to do to get out of it.

among children under age 5 – Hawaii, California, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Nevada,
Florida, Maryland, Georgia, New Jersey, New York and Mississippi. That’s up from six
states and the District of Columbia in 2000.
At current growth rates, seven more states could flip to “minority-majority” status among
