Hillary: The Al Gore of 2008

 Link

 Excerpt:
In 2000, the fact that the Democratic candidate won the popular vote but lost the election caused
great anger and bitterness among some Democrats. Those feelings lasted quite a while. But in 2008,
the prospect that a Democratic candidate might win the popular vote but lose the nomination does not
seem as troubling. Party leaders and their allies in the press are not only not angry and bitter, they don't
even seem unhappy that the primary season might produce a nominee who lost the popular vote.

Why the change?

Can Obama Win Without Her?
Numbers look bad for BO in OH, FL and PA
Clinton rates better against McCain in 3 crucial states

 Link

 Excerpt:
Obama may well be "within reach" of the nomination, but his battle to win bellwether
Ohio currently exceeds his grasp.

His rosy self-assessment came this week after he moved within 100 delegates of clinching
his party's nod. But a new Quinnipiac Poll contained a host of bad numbers for Obama in Ohio
and two other battleground states, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Obama not only trails McCain overall in Ohio, but he lags among several groups crucial to victory
in the Buckeye State, such as independents and voters from the southeastern part of the state.

"It is clear that Obama still has some work to do in Ohio," said Peter Brown, of Quinnipiac.
"The assumption was that this year was going to be a Democratic cakewalk. The data indicate
in battleground states it may not be true."

Maybe Obama should put his country before his ego.
I'd sure hate to do four more years of right-wing insanity.

Subject: racism

Bart, you wrote:

> "Racism is like evil - everyone has some,
>  Some people let it define them, (Bush, Cheney, Reagan, Inhofe, Lott, etc) and some
>  people are knee-jerk, semi-racists who, after some thought, often do the right thing."

This is you at your most insightful.

I think Hillary has lost.
So this election will be a vote on how racist America actually is,
instead of how much the press hates the Clintons.  I am not optimistic.
 The Brew

 Yes, that is depressing.
If we lose this election over our newly-discovered national race problem,
civil rights could face a setback for years or decades and nobody wants that.

...but an Obama/Clinton ticket might be impossible to beat.

Economic fears darken U.S. mood

 Link

 Excerpt:
Growing anxiety about their economic prospects and deep unhappiness with Der Fuhrer
plunged Americans into a dark mood this month, according to a new poll.

Concerns about the direction of the country and personal finances rose sharply,
and dissatisfaction with Der Chimp and his economic and foreign policy all climbed.

Bush's approval rating fell 4 percentage points to 23 percent, a record low.

Hmmm, might be time to take the leap and get one of these...

Obama's Secret War Tax
  by Greg Palast

 Link

  Excerpt:
In a hotel room in Brussels, the chief executives of the world's top oil companies unrolled
a huge map of the Middle East, drew a fat, red line around Iraq and signed their names to it.

The map, the red line, the secret signatures. It explains this war.
It explains this week's rocketing of the price of oil to $134 a barrel.

It happened on July 31, 1928, but the bill came due now.

In 1928, oil company chieftains were faced with a crisis: falling prices due to rising supplies of oil;
the same crisis faced by their successors during the Clinton years, when oil traded at $22 a barrel.

The solution then, as now: stop the flow of oil, squeeze the market, raise the price.
The method: put a red line around Iraq and declare that virtually all the oil under its sands
would remain there, untapped. Their plan: choke supply, raise prices rise, boost profits.
That was the program for 1928. For 2003. For 2008.

I wish to hell the Democrats would call their plan what it is: A war profiteering tax.
War is profitable business - if you're an oil man. But somehow, the public pays the price,
at the pump and at the funerals, and the oil companies reap the benefits.

Subject: Molly Ivins

As I read and listen to the Alter's and the Olbermann's and the Rhodes, etc of this election season,
I really, really, REALLY miss Molly Ivins.  I wonder what she would have to say about all this crap
that's been bandied about the last few months?

I don't know who's corner she would have been in (I suspect Hillary's) but even if she had been in
Obama's corner. I think she would be horrified that Hillary and her supporters had been branded racists.
We sorely miss her sanity and wit. She must be rolling in her grave right now.

Flying Penis Invades Russia

30-second video

Subject: my Obama problem

(Lately) I have not liked anything I have seen from the Obama campaign.
The disrespect he shows for those that paved the way for him disgusts me.
Accusing the Clintons of racism disgusts me. Watching Obama brush off
his shoulder after a debate with Hillary (which she commanded) disgusted me.

How can I vote for this?
  Ben the Saints fan

Ben, it's easy, you just vote "Democrat" and go home.
You will have done your job and saved your country.

 But

...that brush off the shoulder move doesn't sit with me very well either.

When that first came up, I thought anti-Obamas were stretching a point,
but I've seen him do it a time or two since then.  If it means nothing more
than "brushing off" some criticism, I'd be OK with that.

 But

...there was also something about scraping the bottom of his shoe?

IF he's sending secret signals to blacks, signals that say  "The Clintons are
lower than dog shit," that's a problem that could get super-hot, super-fast.

IF that's what's going on, he needs to restrain that bahavior.
